What is the organisation's background? Changes started in 1994 in Stoke on Trent where it has now a become a successful organisation, running 30 groups and employing 30 paid workers through statutory funding through the NHS. It has branched out to the North East and now to Bristol as members have moved away and want to share the experience of what has helped them. Back to top Why was Changes formed…?
Out of need. Recognising the gap in care provided for those with mental health needs by statutory and voluntary organisations, CHANGES developed a service which is easily accessible, long term and user led. Back to top What is the group's self help program...?
This is based on traditional 12 step philosophy (but of a completely secular nature), established psychological techniques, up-to-date self-help techniques, and member's own knowledge and experience. This differs widely from an AA 12 Step program, which is much more central to that organisation than Changes. Back to top How can I attend…?
No referral is necessary - simply come along, you will be warmly welcomed. If you want to speak to the groups organiser before attending please leave a message on the groups answer phone and the organiser will phone back. Alternatively you can email. Back to top Who runs the groups…?
The groups are run by experienced coordinators who have undertaken a special Changes course. Often coordinators have attended meetings in the past before taking on a facilitating role. Coordinators both participate in the meeting and keep it on track. Back to top What does it cost…?
Changes meetings are free. Back to top What is mutual help…?
It's people joining together to help each other. At CHANGES you are both helper and helped. From the first meeting your input and experience of life will be valued. Back to top What form do the meetings place…?
Although taking place in an informal setting, each meeting follows a set agenda, which ensures structure, a positive approach, and individual progress. We use extensive self help material produced by the group, in the discussion part of the meeting, to help you find better ways to manage your illness. Back to top Why do people attend the meetings…?
Generally speaking, to get help. CHANGES can help with any mental health problem. How long and often you attend depends largely on the nature and severity of your problem. Back to top Can Changes help me...?
